Improving the print

So I am sure there are lots of tips for improving the print, most seem to be covered already on various forums, but one problem that I am having that I could not find info on (probably because I don't know its correct name) is the small lead in print lines that get printed on the right side of the build plate before the printer starts on the main part.

When printing a small object, the XYZ slicer app automatically creates this on the right side of the print bed, but on larger or more complicated parts, it doesn't. What seems to be happening is that the print head heats up to 210 well before the build plate gets to 90. In the mean time, whatever filament is already in the print head, drips out, so presumably those extra printed lines are there to prime the print head before it starts to work on the main part. Without those lines, my printer misses out the first few centimeters of the print, which usually ends up causing problems later in the print.

I have tried adding these lines to my 3D design, but I can't seem to get the size right, and there is no way to make sure they get printer first anyway.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

You could try to print with rafts/support, or use slic3r and and one of the hacks to print without xyzware.

Another interesting note - it is possible to print an object along the back edge that drives the extruder into the screws the hold the glass plate.

I have not tried slic3r yet, does it also add a few extra lines to print first ? I actually don't mind sticking with the stock software, I just need to find a way to print these extra lines so that by the time it start on the main part there is actually filament coming out of the nozzle.

I noticed that on the demo keychain, they just print a single circle around the perimeter of where the keychain will print instead of the lines that XYZware generates. That works well, too. Obvioulsly the demo file was not generated by XYZware!
If you somehow make sure that the code for the priming circle is at the head of the gcode file, it should work.

Yes, i noticed that too, but I have no idea how to generate that extra outline for anything else that I design. Even if I add that outline to the 3D model, there is no way to make sure it gets printed first (well no way that I know of), so without it first starting on that first, it doesn't solve the problem.

XYZware uses slic3r as the back end, It would more than likely be easy enough to change the config file, or save another called test and change the config to match a slicer config that uses the extra outline. For whats it's worth the version of xyzware that comes on the CD in the box has slicer settings for that extra prime line around the part. I will see if I can get some time away from the shop to play with xyzware configs tonight.

If I have time today away from the 4 cnc machines I am working on I will try and make a new setting for me and make some definitive changes and see how it looks.

Also for what it's worth I can find no print quality difference using the old software version when inputting slicer files so I don't think I will be upgrading it anytime soon again.
